My goals for 2017

Here's the time of year again to reflect on this past year and set goals for next year.

A long ago I got from a book that you should write all the goals you can think of. You might have 20-30 goals. Rank all of them in order and pick the top 3. Then everyday, write them down to make sure you are laser focus on achievement them everyday. I did that about 10 years ago and back then it was :

  • Start a company
  • Have 5 kids
  • Complete my Master's degree

I can at least say I completed 1 of them. The 2 others are work-in-progress. Actually, one mistake that I made was to be too vague especially for the one "Start a company". The more precise your goal is, the easier it is break it down and figure out execute it.

As Peter Thiel famously ask his porto-folio companies :

What is your 10 year plan?
Now tell me why can't you execute it in the next 6 months?

Let's reflect a bit back based on what I have accomplished last year. Here are my goals for 2016 and their statuses:

GOAL IMPORTANCE STATUS (as of dec 2016)
Fall in love 1 WIP
Start a company 1 WIP
Have 5kids 1 WIP
Generate xxxk$ in passive income 2 Achieved
Bring rainy-day fund to xxxk$ 2 Achieved
Practice Japanese (learn Kanjis) 3 WIP
Practice Portuguese 3 Not done
Take Chinese lessons 3 Not done
Write blog about technology 2 WIP
Get a 6-pack 2 Achieved
Find a new job 1 WIP

New goals for 2017:

Here is a list of new goals I am planning to work on this year:

  • Speadsheet with all my "new" friends. People I met through my businesses. Maintain this list and make sure I "nurture" those relationships.
  • Increase my traffic on "www.befreeandwealth.com" to 10000/months. I started the blog in 2016, but only really starting to post at the end of dec this year. So I'm considering I'm pretty much starting from scratch.

Removing goals from 2016:

There are some successes in my last year goals. One is about my savings, the other is about the passive income and finally the last is about my physical shape. In the later, I started following the "anti-inflammatory" diet (I will post more about this later). I also go to the gym 3 times a week, plus I do my martial art classes. I can proudly now take those goals off my list. But I can also move the goal post a bit further down as well (such as trying to do gain 30lb of muscle). But I need to review my priorities before doing so.

What are you goals for 2017? Do you have any tips and trick on how to stay focus on them and make sure you achieve them?
